(The Cloud is just your Old Computer

The Cloud is just your Old Computer was a workshop I gave together with Aymeric Mansoux in October 2023 as part of the FIBER Labs. It was the first of three workshops in the series "Practicing Permacomputing" that advocates for the development of radically-slightly-more sustainable approaches to computing.

In this two day workshop, participants each brought an old computer, which we turned into a functional server. On the first day, we covered a history of the terminal, gave an intro to the command line and installed Linux. On the second day we installed a bunch of services and played around with different things you can do with your own server.

The workshop was facilitated by an Etherpad instance running on a server in the Fiber offices, an old 2007 iMac which had a screen that lit up red whenever it was put under stress, for example when a lot of people were accessing it.
